Organizing Your Home for an Edmonton Winter: The Systems That Make Life Easier

Winter in Edmonton changes the way we use our homes.

Suddenly, a simple trip out the door involves boots, coats, gloves and hats. Winter sports equipment comes back into rotation, the garage needs to accommodate snow gear, and we spend considerably more time indoors.

A home that worked perfectly well all summer can suddenly start feeling crowded.

The good news? You don't need to reorganize your entire house. A few thoughtful changes in the right places can make everyday life much easier this winter.

Start With the Entryway

Your mudroom or entryway works overtime during an Edmonton winter.

Before adding winter gear, remove summer shoes, lighter jackets and anything else you won't need for the next several months.

Then give your most-used items the easiest-to-access spaces.

Frequently worn coats should be within reach. Boots need a designated area, and smaller items such as gloves, hats and scarves can be contained in baskets or drawers.

If you have children, keep their everyday items where they can easily reach—and put away—them.

Don't Make One Closet Hold Everything

Winter clothing is bulky, and it's easy to overwhelm a closet.

Instead of keeping every coat and pair of boots near the door, prioritize what you actually wear regularly.

Occasional-use pieces can be stored elsewhere.

This is something we consider in almost every space we organize: the things you use most deserve the best storage.

Give Winter Gear a Home

Skis, snowboards, hockey equipment, sleds and snow gear can quickly take over garages and mudrooms.

Create zones based on how frequently things are used.

Wall storage is particularly helpful for keeping bulky equipment off the floor while still making it accessible.

And don't forget about wet gear. Boot trays, hooks and designated drying areas prevent wet mittens and snow pants from becoming clutter throughout the house.

Reset the Garage Now

If summer gear is still occupying your garage, now is the time to make the seasonal switch.

Store gardening supplies, camping equipment and other warm-weather items. Bring snow shovels, ice melt and winter equipment forward.

If you want to park inside this winter, park the vehicle first and organize around the remaining space.

It's much easier than organizing the garage and discovering afterward that the vehicle doesn't fit.

Look at Your Everyday Drop Zones

Winter can also make existing clutter spots worse.

Keys, mail, backpacks and gloves tend to land wherever it's convenient.

Instead of constantly moving these things, create storage where they naturally land.

Sometimes the best organizing system isn't about changing your habits.

It's about creating a system around them.

Your Home Should Change With the Seasons

An organized home isn't meant to remain exactly the same year-round.

The systems that work in July may not be the ones you need in January.

At Tidy Matters Professional Organizing, we create beautiful, functional systems around the way our clients actually live—not around what an organized home is “supposed” to look like.

Because professional organizing isn't simply about making a home look tidy.

It's about making everyday life easier.
