Organizing Your Fall & Halloween Decor: A Simple System for Every Season
The pumpkins are coming out, the leaves are changing, and suddenly we're pulling bins of fall and Halloween decor out of storage.
It's fun when the decorations go up.
It's usually a little less fun when everything has to go back down.
Seasonal decor has a way of accumulating over the years. A few pumpkins become three bins of pumpkins. Halloween gets mixed with Thanksgiving, random decor gets tucked into whichever container has room, and somehow there's always one item that doesn't fit anywhere.
A little organization now can make decorating—and putting everything away—much easier.

Start With What You Actually Use
Before decorating, take everything out and look at what you have.
This is the perfect time to declutter because you can see which pieces you're excited to use and which ones have been sitting in the bottom of the bin for years.
Ask yourself:
Do I still like this?
Does it suit my home?
Did I use it last year?
Would I buy it again today?
You don't need to get rid of decor simply because it's old. Sentimental pieces absolutely deserve a place. But you also don't need to store things you no longer enjoy just because they're seasonal.
Separate Fall From Halloween
If you decorate for both fall and Halloween, consider storing them separately.
Fall decor often comes out earlier and stays longer, while Halloween pieces have a much shorter window.
Keeping them separate means you aren't digging through skeletons and spiderwebs when you're simply looking for your favourite fall pumpkins.
You can also create smaller categories such as outdoor decor, tabletop decor and textiles if your collection is larger.
Choose the Right Containers
Clear, stackable bins are one of our favourite options for seasonal storage because you can quickly see what's inside.
If you prefer solid containers for a cleaner storage room, label them clearly on more than one side.
And don't automatically buy the largest bin available.
Large bins become extremely heavy and tend to turn into catch-alls. Several manageable containers organized by category can be much easier to use.
Protect the Pieces You Love
This is one of our favourite organizing rules.
Don't fill every container completely.
If you know you enjoy adding a new piece or two each year, leave room for your collection to grow.
Otherwise, one new pumpkin can suddenly require an entirely new storage bin.

Make Next Fall Easier
When it's time to put everything away, resist the urge to simply get it done as quickly as possible.
Group like items together, remove anything that was damaged or that you no longer want, and return everything to its designated container.
At Tidy Matters Professional Organizing, we believe good organization isn't about having less of everything.
It's about creating thoughtful systems for the things you choose to keep.
Because seasonal decorating should be the fun part.
Finding—and eventually putting away—the decorations shouldn't be the scary part.
